Crumb (1995)
Underground comic artist Robert Crumb offers unfettered access and self-examination in a documentary about his life and work. Funny and fascinating, the movie covers Crumb’s more controversial comics and how they were informed by his dysfunctional family.

At times painful to watch, but beautiful throughout, Crumb is perfect filmmaking. The fact that it wasn't even nominated for the Best Documentary Academy Award (to say nothing about Best Picture) should tell you all you need to know about the Oscar selection process. See this film.
