Funny People (2009)
Director Judd Apatow’s most mature work mines the dark world of stand-up comedy for dick jokes followed by moments of pathos. Adam Sandler plays a movie star — a meaner, lonelier version of himself with a leukemia-related death sentence — and he’s very good.

ReplyDeleteAll in all, I thought this was a tremendous movie. I thought it showed the stand-up world with all its warts and highlights. Sandler was fantastic, and this seems like the perfect Jonah Hill part. (Small bits here and there.) The cameos were wonderful: Eric Bana as super Australian guy; Jason Scwartzman as "Yo, Teach"; the Apatow family were, once again, scene stealers (the girls, not the wife); even James Taylor (?) stole the show. Seth Rogen was his usual charming self, though I'm afraid his brow may soon be stuck forever furrowed if he's not careful.
